QUINCEAÑERA HISTORY & TRADITIONS The Quinceanera, or sometimes known as Quince Años, is a young woman’s celebration of her fifteenth birthday in certain Spanish-speaking regions of the Americas including Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the United States. It is whereby the birthday is honored in a unique and different way to any other birthday. It is sometimes represented as XV Años, which means 15 years, only a few countries refer to the actual party as quinceañera.  Several different theories exist as to the origin of the quinceañera celebration. The most common theory is that the quinceanera was a result of a mixture of religious traditions from both Spanish conquerors and the native people of Mexico. The “coming of age” traditions are contained within this celebration as well as Mexican ceremonies along with elements of Spanish culture.In Cuba, this event is frequently considered to be one of the most important events of a young woman’s life due to it officially marking the changeover from a child to an adult. A big white dress is usually worn by the quinceanera. The Dominican Republic society considers this day to be extremely important. When the party has reached its peak level, photographers from local newspapers arrive to take photographs that will then appear in the following day’s newspaper and magazines. In El Salvador, there are three steps to this ceremony. First, the separation from the quinceanera’s parents takes place when she is requested to blow out her candles or accept her flowers. Then follows the transitional state, whereby she is no longer an adolescent, but not yet a full woman. And finally is the part of the celebration where she can emerge during the evening wearing a red dress to show womanhood. This celebration is generally a formal dress occasion in Peru. It is normal for the quinceanera to descend a staircase as music plays, whereby she will then dance the waltz with her father, godfather, or grandfather. At a Puerto Rican quinceanera celebration, the party girl is accompanied by her relatives and friends. They join together for a religious ceremony before the party. When the girl attends mass, she traditionally sits in a peacock chair which is covered in flowers such as Roses or Poppies.  The Quinceanera celebration is becoming increasingly popular in the United States now days, due to there being a large population of Latino residents in all areas of the U.S. However, the way in which this event is celebrated varies greatly upon the location, family tradition, and religion of the quinceañera in question.It is common practice in California for family members of godparents, otherwise known as Padrinos, to contribute funds for this special day. The godparents may be asked to provide the dress, shoes, alcoholic beverages, centerpieces, cost for the hall, or other items that are essential for a Quinceanera. Certain traditions such as changing the shoes, the first dance, and the traditional ball gown worn by the quinceañera seem to be practiced almost everywhere. However, all other aspects of this celebration have become subject to the young girl and her family wishes.
