History of Father's Day
Who can forget when Darth Vader hoarsely whispered, “Luke, I am your father.” That certainly qualified as a unique Father’s Day moment in history. Where would we be without dear old Dad? Let us look back at some other famous fathers. Before we go…have you noticed father is spelled fat-her.
The earliest record of Father’s Day was found in the ruins of Babylon. A young boy carved a unique Father’s Day message on a card made of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. He wished his father good health and a long life. There was no mention of socks or a tie.
The first recorded celebration of Father's Day in the United States took place on July 5, 1908 in West Virginia. After a deadly mine explosion took the lives of over three hundred miners, Grace Golden Clayton suggested a day to honor the men to her church’s pastor.
In Washington State, Sonora Smart Dodd was in church listening to the preacher’s sermon on Mother’s Day and wondered why there was not also Father’s Day. Sonora’s mother had died giving birth to her sixth child and her courageous and loving father had raised the family by himself. Sonora decided all fathers should be celebrated with their own unique Father’s Day. The tradition of Father’s Day was observed in Spokane, Washington June 19, 1910.
Sonora Dodd’s father, William Smart, the inspiration for her Father’s Day idea, besides raising six children, had served in the American Civil War. Sadly, he never knew of the tribute his daughter paid to his memory. She initially hoped to honor her father by Father’s Day observance taking place on the anniversary of his death, June 5.
Father’s Day is now celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June. Roses are the official flower for Father's Day, red ones are worn for fathers who are still living and white ones stand in for those who have died.
President Coolidge recommended Fathers Day become a national holiday in 1924. It was nearly fifty years later before President Nixon officially recognized Fathers Day in 1972.
The Germans have a different way of celebrating Father's Day than in America. Germany's unique Father’s Day began in the Middle Ages as a religious procession honoring "God, the Father." In the 1700s, Father’s Day in Germany became a family day for honoring Dad. By the 19th century, German father’s turned their day into more of a ‘drinking holiday’. For some German dads, Father’s Day is closer to a pub-crawl with an unusual twist from the toast we salute our Dads in the U.S.
In 2004, there were close to 100,000- ‘stay-at-home’ dads, taking care of the kids. I can guarantee these fathers deserve a break! Fathers are super heroes in the eyes of their children. Many stepfathers stepped in with as much love and concern for their stepchildren as if they were the natural parent. Dads are not hard to please. Most fathers would consider it a unique Father’s Day if we mowed the grass or turned off a few light switches in the house. Make this a special Father’s Day to remember for your one of a kind father.
Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.
~ Bill Cosby
What Makes A Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
